Q: Are permanent eyelid tattoos safe and healthy for the eyes?

A: The tattoos can release toxic pigment to the surrounding skin and cause structural damage to the delicate oil glands.

Q: Should eyeliner be applied to the waterline (opening of your oil gland margins)?

A: It is highly recommended not to apply any eyeliner or cosmetics on the waterline. Applying eyeliner to the waterline can cause dry eye symptoms to worsen because the cosmetic product can block the oil glands (meibomian glands). These oil glands need to have a clear opening to release healthy oils in order to prevent the tears from drying up. Furthermore, keep an eye out for Kohl/Kajal (a traditional eyeliner cosmetic of Middle Eastern, Asian and North African societies) as some current products may contain high levels of lead. In September 2005, Health Canada issued a public advisory on the potential exposure to lead through traditional kohl/kajal. If you are wearing traditional kohl/kajal, it is recommended to switch to less toxic and more eye-friendly products.
